Electron Microscopic Pathology

Electron Microscopic Pathology

The Electron Microscopy Section is home to a Philips 300 transmission electron microscope, a Jeol 100 SX transmission electron microscope, and an Hitachi 520 scanning electron microscope with a PGT X-ray analysis system. Our facilities include three darkrooms and one processing laboratory with all ancillary equipment.

We are the only diagnostic electron microscopy facility in the Central New York area, receiving specimens not only from our own campus, but also from all Syracuse area hospitals, as well as hospitals in Ithaca, Binghamton, Utica, Rome, Watertown, Auburn, Fulton and Herkimer

Our Section handles approximately 400 specimens/year; about 70% are for clinical diagnosis (kidney, muscle, nerve, bowel, nasal epithelium for cilia studiesand tumors), the remainder are for research and teaching purposes. Completed ultrastructural studies, from tissue fixation to printing of micrographs, are available within seven days, written pathology reports require an additional seven days.
